WEEK 11 Blog: My First Week of Teaching
November 3-November 7
- This week, I began my teaching experience with the 2nd grade students at Bishop Dunn Memorial School. My group members and I taught the students all about factories! :) On Wednesday, November 5th, we taught our direct instruction lesson. I learned a great deal about the students on my first day of teaching! For starters, I realized once again that repetition is key!
- Our students showed their understanding of the key factory vocabulary terms (i.e., factory, producer, goods, consumer, and factory process). However, I think that we could have displayed the definition slides more often. Along with their respective symbols, I believe that the students would have benefited from further direct instruction. If time permitted, I would have modified my teaching method in that repetitive manner.
ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP PLAN! :)
- Despite some technical difficulties, my group and I overcame the issues and were prepared with a backup plan. If I learned one thing after my first day it is that a teacher should always have print copies of everything! Technology is fickle!
- I look forward to many more experiences in the classroom! I enjoyed teaching the students at Bishop Dunn Memorial School. The students brought such wonderful energy to the lesson! They made me feel comfortable and right at home! :) After my first experience teaching in a classroom, I can truly say that it is my life's goal to become an elementary school teacher. I cannot wait to see what additional wonders my future holds!
